PRESS RELEASE - 06/11/20

The new Scottish downhill mountain bike world champion, elite athletes, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary, CEO of the 2023 Cycling World Championships, representatives from trails associations across the world, IMBA Europe, leading academics , and more - are all part of the full programme for the Scottish Mountain Bike Gathering 2020 which has been released today. This exciting programme and unique virtual one day event will focus on the major issues and opportunities which face the mountain bike sector in Scotland.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen mountain biking, and cycling generally, grow beyond what anyone could have predicted. The opportunities and challenges that face our industry and community will fundamentally change the mountain bike scene. Now is the time to accelerate many of the plans and actions within the Scottish MTB Strategy 2019 – 2025 and this unprecedented opportunity to bring together the whole mountain bike community, is a great starting point.

We are delighted that Tourism Secretary Fergus Ewing will open the gathering, demonstrating the Scottish Government’s continued support for the industry.

We will be hearing from Trudie Lindblade, the newly appointed CEO of the 2023 Cycling World Championships. Trudie will give an insight into this historic and innovative event will take place over two weeks in August 2023. Bringing together 13 UCI World Championships for different cycling disciplines in one unprecedented event that will see thousands of the world’s best cyclists vying to win the prestigious rainbow jersey. With an expected television audience of 1billion, the opportunities to showcase Scotland are massive.

We have speakers lined up from Nature Scot, Forestry and Land Scotland, businesses, leading influencers and many others to discuss the key issues affecting the future of mountain biking. These interactive sessions will help us understand the partnerships and effective working relationships needed to create a sustainable direction for the sport. We will be hearing just how it is possible to grow the support for mountain biking to continue to develop trails and businesses in a sustainable manner.

We will also be putting a spotlight on progress, and challenges, we have in key Scottish mountain bike destinations. With individual sessions looking at Fort William and Lochaber, Aberdeenshire and the Tweed Valley.
A special ‘rider focussed’ evening will end the day. We will first hold a live session looking at building trails with landowner permission. This will be an opportunity to see an excellent example of the processes involved. Featuring pro rider Ben Cathro, Forestry and Land Scotland and the Aberdeenshire Trails Association (ATA).

The second part of the evening will be a celebration of a challenging, but unbelievable, year for elite Scottish mountain bikers. The session will feature the new downhill mountain bike world Champion, Reece Wilson along with top performers Isla Short, Katy Winton and Mikayla Parton. They will chat about their successes and their plans for next season. This is also a fantastic opportunity to put questions ‘live’ to them!

Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland (DMBinS) is the lead organiser of the event. Using their experience of delivering award winning international conferences, DMBinS will be in working partnership with Highland company, XPONORTH to deliver the sessions through an innovative interactive platform and app
